,Today was our book tasting day! Students were given a reservation at a specific table to sample some books. Students looked at the cover and backs of books and formed an opinion. They cracked open the books and read the first few pages and wrote what they thought about the book as they nibbled on cookies. Students then gave the book a rating. They did this five different times with five different books, with a purpose of finding some new books or a new series that they would like to read. I was so glad that even my reluctant readers found a couple books that they want to read. Students filled out a ballot of their top three books. Shortly, I will use this information they provided to place them into book clubs, where we will practice looking for those signposts that we have been learning about. After our incredibly long opinion unit, I wanted the kids to practice doing shorter opinion pieces in a smaller amount of time. That way, they get used to stating their opinion and using reasons with parallel structure and mini stories to back up their claims. First, I am going to give the students an authentic audience by having them write an opinion letter to Mr. Henderson about a change they want to see made at the school. These changes can be serious (like having Spanish as a special) or not so serious (like having Mountain Dew coming out of the drinking fountains). Students were warned that they need reasons that support even their silly ideas and that may take some creativity on their parts. We started today by generating or making a list of all the changes we want. I loved hearing all the excited talk and ideas as the students jotted down their ideas. They are already hooked on this project!
We had a wonderful morning on Friday getting lost in good books, finishing up typing our essays, and having conversations about the books we are reading. I was able to listen to many kids read one-on-one while others got comfortable and into their books.
Isaac is our super hero this week. As he presented his poster, we were getting a great taste of his sense of humor. Thanks, Isaac!
After doing some fun Valentine math and writing activities, we passed out our Valentine's. After recess and lunch, it was time to feast. Thank you to everyone who contributed to our festivities! after we feasted for awhile we watched a little Super Puppies- cute, adorable puppies with capes and face masks, ready to save the world! We cleaned up and then students were challenged to make an animal made entirely out of hearts. We had some dolphins, owls, giraffes, and snakes.
Liam is this week's super hero and what a hero he is! He's responsible, respectful and safe and his poster is a perfect example of his creativity.
Students have been working hard on publishing their opinion pieces. After reviewing where the Tab, shift, exclamation point, apostrophe, and question mark keys are, students were eager to get typing!
Thanks to all of those who ordered books, we were able to use the bonus points I receive from orders to purchase 76 new books! It's like Christmas in our classroom! I purchased many book sets for for next unit, which is practicing the signposts in book clubs, but I also was able to get single copies of the newest released book of many popular series. Thank you!
Chase was our super hero last week and did such a great job presenting his colorful poster. Thanks, Chase!
