Students have been working so hard on their informational books. I teach and model each nonfiction text structure (problem/solution, compare/contrast. description, sequence, and cause/effect), then students work on their chapters, using whatever text structure they may may need. These are the same text structures that students encountered in our nonfiction reading unit. Students work at their own pace, and move their "Rock Star" sticky notes along the chart, so I can see what they are working on and if they need to get going a little quicker. Students are responsible for having an introduction, four chapters that they decided the chapter names, signal or transition words, and a conclusion. Students also need to make sure they've included paragraphs, illustrations, captions, at least one diagram, a table of contents, and a glossary of their expert words. I am hoping to finish these up next week. They are coming along! Here are some examples of some of their pages.

Because of all the books that were ordered, we got a stack of wonderful, free books for our classroom! Thank you to all who ordered! We will have one more book order before school is out to give you a chance to stock pile some books for summer that are at your child's level.
Thanks again! Students have been working hard on their informational books. So far, they should have finished their covers, table of contents, chapter one and be working on chapter two. They are coming along! There is a lot to learn in this unit, but the kids seem to really be enjoying it and learning a ton. Below are pictures of most of the covers. Students picked such a variety of topics to write about. I love it! They were reminded to capitalize titles and get their spelling checked, but it looks like some did not. Uh oh! Thankfully, most did a great job!
After taking the M-Step test for a good portion of the morning, the kids needed a break to move around, run, scream, and play with friends. Recess is just what they needed!
Clay to the rescue! Clay did an amazing job on his poster and on presenting it. He is such a polite, hard working super hero! Way to go Clay!
Gracie is an amazing super hero who is consistently respectful, responsible, and safe. She could be seen last week with her cape billowing out from behind her and a smile on her face. She is a hard worker who is very creative and who shared a wonderful book with us on Thursday. Thanks for being an amazing super hero, Gracie!
Mystery Book clubs have started! Students got put into book clubs based on reading level and interests. Students previewed the book and made some predictions about what they think is going to be the big mystery. Club members then had to decide on a plan that works for their club and that would get their book finished in 5 days. This takes a lot of discussing and listening! Students have done a chunk of their reading, and are ready to meet with each other tomorrow to talk about the witnesses, the crime, the victim, the suspects, the alibis, and any of their sticky notes. After they meet to discuss these things with their book club, they independently do the next chunk of reading. So far, students seem to be loving it! |
