During our nonfiction unit, students have been practicing focusing on the three big questions from reading experts Kylene Beers and Robert Probst. In their book, Reading Nonfiction: Notice & Note Stances, Signposts, and Strategies, they state, "the role of the reader of nonfiction texts is to be active, to challenge the text, and to invite the text to challenge him." They go on to write that the three big questions of nonfiction "encourages questioning the text but also questioning one's own assumption, preconceptions, and possibly misconceptions." Students are learning that nonfiction is so much more than just "not fake." They need to question it, and think about it, and let it challenge, change, or confirm their thinking. |
After practicing each question individually, students got in small groups and read a nonfiction book at their level, while focusing on asking the three big questions. They jotted answers to the three big questions on sticky notes as they read and sorted their notes on the board according to the questions . It was a great way to share their thinking and see what questions was the easiest/hardest for them to answer.
