We had our first winter wonderland recess! Nothing is cuter than kids in snow hats! Please make sure your child is dressed for the weather. There were some cold hands today.

Most kids took full advantage of their big writing chunk. I love to see kids spread out, get comfortable, and get writing. Many students had their story mountain (their plan), their character paper, and their writer's notebook. They were so excited when they were able to weave the traits of their character into their stories and showing their reader, not just telling them. I live to watch their faces light up when they have done it successfully. Keep up the good writing, kids!
Last week, we had some awesome super heroes! Both Lucas and Wyatt were wonderful, cape-wearing super heroes. Thanks, boys!
Not this kid! With the power out in parts of Montage, some dedicated students are doing their homework by candlelight. Now that is some dedication!
We have been reading books about quotation marks, looking at how authors use quotation marks, editing other people's writing for quotation marks, and digging through our own writing in search of quotation marks. Today, students had to find a quote in their realistic fiction story and copy it down using correct quotation marks, commas, and end punctuation. This helped me see quickly who is transferring the lessons to their own writing. Thankfully, many students are! If they don't have it yet, we will keep working on it!
This week students went on a quest around the room looking for 12 task cards. When they discovered the task card, they had to do what the card asked them to do, which was mostly fixing a sentence about super heroes so that it had correct quotation marks, commas, and end punctuation. Students traveled around the room with partners.
Students got a big chunk of writing time in today. They have been working hard on their realistic stories. First we have created a character by thinking about the internal and external characteristics and drawing a detailed picture, planned out our story by using SWBST and a story mountain, and worked on our leads to our story, making sure they include the character's name, setting, and a hook. Ask your child about his/her story so far.
After writing a part of our story, we shared it with a friend. Students were listening for ways the authors wove descriptions of their character throughout their story- showing the reader, not just telling the reader about the character. Cara presented her colorful poster to the class. We learned so much about her! Thanks, Super Hero Cara! We also heard from Super Hero, cape wearing Kendi. I love that she wants her bunny as her side kick. There could be a story there!
The class had to finish a paragraph that started with (their name) is thankful for. . . .
I loved reading these! I read them before school this morning and it might be the best way to start a day, so I thought I would share a few. I am so glad that they realized that they have so much to be thankful for! Justis was a wonderful super hero and we learned a lot about him when he presented his poster. Thanks, Justis! Matthew was our other super hero. We enjoyed listening to him present his awesome poster!
