Our last week, we discussed ice safety, like how to tell if ice is safe to walk on, what to do if you break through, and what to do to stay warm. CPR was also talked about. The kids were great active listeners and were very respectful. We are so proud of them!

Once a week, students enter the room and get situated. Then they do Choice Board, where they have the choice of doing legos, play-doh, Rubik cube, magnetic sentences, magnetic faces, synonym search, magnetic tiles, or Kanoodle. The purpose is to grow as a community, to have conversations, and to help others in a cooperative way. I love eavesdropping on their conversations and watching the excitement as they decide together what they are going to build, make, solve, or create.
Last week Wesley was our super hero of the week. He can most often be seen building things or reading. He is an avid reader and devours books with great tenacity! He is very safe, respectful, and responsible. Thanks Wes!
I love doing Reader's Workshop in our classroom becuase instead of us all reading the same book in a basal, students are able to practice what we are learning in a book of their choice, at their level. They are so into their books! It is awesome to watch the kids excitedly suggest books to their peers, seeking out the next book in a series, and getting lost in their books. We have been discussing characters and how words that characters say and things that characters do tell us a lot about who they are as a character. It tells us their traits. It also helps us make predictions, not only about what they might do next, but how they might do it. Earlier this week, students had to jot a sticky note about what they think their character is going to do in their book and how do they think they are going to do it. We did a sticky note together with the book Bink and Gollie that I read aloud and then students had to do it in their own book. Today, I showed students three traits I know about Opal in our read aloud book Because of Winn Dixie. I drew a picture of the main character, thought of three traits that describe her and then I had to find evidence in my book for each trait. It had to be exact sentences of what she was doing or saying that was evidence of that particular trait. Students then had to do the same with the character in the book they are reading. It was awesome to see kids digging through their books looking for the evidence.
Maya was our Super Hero last week. She can often be seen with a smile on her face and her cape fluttering out behind her!
This week, students learned about life jackets. They learned what is considered a life jacket and what is not. They also learned how a life jacket should fit you correctly and the different kind of life jackets that you use depending on the situation, like boating, swimming, fishing, etc. Students also learned how to huddle in the water by joining arms until someone can come and help. They did a great job of listening and did an even better job of going out of their comfort zone to jump into the pool off the side, the block, or the diving board. Way to go kids!
Our Haiku book is almost ready to send into the publisher. Our cover is finished. Our Meet the Author page is almost done. We just need a couple students to finish up their self portraits. The poems and pictures are complete. We can't send it in without all the book forms returned though, so please send them in with your child. Another form is going home today for those who I don't have one for yet. The kids are very excited!
Every Friday, students practice their spelling sorts using a dry erase board. They practice with a friend and take turns giving each other their spelling words and checking to see if they are spelled correctly. It's a great practice right before the test!
Kaden was our super hero a couple of weeks ago and what a super hero he is! He is often responsible, respectful, and safe! Thanks, Kaden!
