Today we read an article that talks about banning sledding. We read through it once together. Then with a yellow highlighter, students read through it again on their own and highlighted any parts that would support allowing sledding. After we discussed that, students read through with a different colored highlighter and highlighted any parts that support banning sledding.
Students then talked with kids at their table about their opinions on banning sledding. They had to back up their opinions with reasons from the article. Next, students filled out a box and bullets paper. Their opinion statement goes in the box and they list their reasons, using parallel structure for each bullet. They are getting so used to organizing their opinions this way that they are getting very quick at doing it. Tomorrow, they will be writing a letter to the editor of the Beacon to explain why they are in favor or against the proposal of banning sledding. I told the kids that it was made up, but they had to pretend that Whitehall and Montague are thinking about banning sledding on all city properties. What a wonderful five days we've had at pool school! Today students learned about ice rescue and how to barrel roll on the ice to safety.
Thank you to the PTO for paying for our busing and to the dads who helped out in the boys' locker room. Super Sophie has a nice ring to it, doesn't it? Sophie the super hero is a super reader who often has her nose in a book. She is an avid reader. I just love it!
Fletcher was our super hero last week and what a wonderful super hero he is! He is respectful, responsible, and safe. He could be seen in the halls of RRO with his cape billowing behind him and coming to the rescue of students. Way to go, Fletch!
We will be using this link in class to practice using the online tools and to see sample problems of the M-Step test. I encourage parents to take a look at it as well. I approach the test with a relaxed manner, emphasizing to students to just do their best and ensuring them that it is not on the report card. https://wbte.drcedirect.com/MI/portals/mi/
We had such a busy and exciting Friday! Many students dressed like lumberjacks, big pushes, barn bosses, cooks, and blacksmiths. I gave student fake, sticky mustaches to the kids. They looked awesome! They had me giggling all day! Carmen and Lilly interrupted us with s good book as we gathered around to listen to them read, we worked on our essays with our chromebooks, and we had . . . a visit from Miss Walley!!! It was great to see her. She had the kids do a fun painting activity. She was the kids' hero as she made it so they couldn't take their spelling test due to time. Ha!
Students were so excited to get their Chromebook and begin publishing their personal essay. They've worked a long time on these, and they can't wait to hold the printed paper in their hand. We are going to finish them up today! Yesterday took us a little while to get going because they had to learn where the keys were, like quotation marks, commas, apostrophe, exclamation point, etc. today, they will be able to pull out the chromebooks and start typing right away. Thanks for editing these with your child. There were a few students who didn't bring their notebooks back, so they lost out on a lot of work time. I hope they have them today! |
