The unit took us through generating many, many ideas of topics we could write about, which was a big problem during the pre assessment. Kids just couldn't think of what to write about. Now they have many ideas they could choose from. Then we wrote our opinion statement and then used the box and bullets organizer to get our opinion statement and evidence from our lives organized and with parallel structure. These should have come home recently so you could see if your child is hitting the learning target or not.
Next, we looked at many examples and then wrote our introduction. We then took our first bullet and turned it into the first sentence of our paragraph, followed by a mini story that supports our opinion. The mini stories were just that- stories that are short but support our opinion. They should have dialogue and some detail. We then did the same thing with our second bullet before writing our conclusion.
Tonight, students are bringing home their essays to get help editing. A note will also be coming home to explain what three things to edit for. Please have these back by Friday!
We will be typing our essays in the computer lab on Monday.
