Our last day before Christmas break was filled with crafts, reading Christmas books, and playing reindeer games. I cherish these moments with your kids as I watch their excitement and smiles. We finished up a project that was an introduction to opinion writing. Students had to fill out a plan sheet or graphic organizer to organize their introduction, reasons, examples, and conclusion as to why Santa should hire them as an elf. Some students had some very creative and hilarious reasons. Having no snow outside didn't stop us from having a fun snowball fight. We had one in our classroom! I have a lot of fake snowballs that are just the perfect size. The students were divided into teams for the candy cane race. They had to move a candy cane from one end of their line to the other end without using their hands to touch the candy cane. They could only use another candy cane. If they dropped it, they had to start over. Next the kids got to wear some funky darkened glasses, get spun around and had to pin the nose on the reindeer. I got a lot of laughs watching this! Time for our delicious feast. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this celebration! The kids were able to enjoy some wonderful treats. Thank you for all the wonderful gifts I was showered with. They were so thoughtful and I felt very loved. I hope you enjoy this season with your family. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

We have been learning to watch our characters closely in what they do and what they say. Paying close attention to them allows us to make better predictions, understand the story more deeply, and to get more lost in our book. We should be feeling what they are feeling because we are walking in their shoes through the book with them.
We then discussed that many main characters change in the books we read. To practice identifying character traits and watching for a character changing, we listened to the book Auntie Claus. As students listened, they filled in a paper about the traits of the main character and how that character changed. It is a wonderful book and I think students are really beginning to identify deeper traits than just happy and sad. Mrs. Woller's class had the opportunity to be taste testers for some possible upcoming food that would be offered in our cafeteria. Cranberries are the harvest of the month this month. We learned a lot of cool facts about cranberries, like how the berries grow for 16 months and have 4 air chambers, and we watched a short video clip about how cranberries are harvested. What a crazy fruit! Students then used all five senses to taste and experience a fresh cranberry and dried cranberries. The students' faces were hilarious as they tasted the tartness of the fresh cranberries. Students then learned a little about quinoa before trying the first recipe with cranberries- Cranappley Chicken with Superpower Quinoa. It was a delicious hit among students! Next, students tried Chicalicious Salad. Yum! Surveys were passed out to get the students' input and to vote on their favorite dish. It was such a fun learning experience! Students were asked to break their fresh cranberries in half to see the white inside of the fruit and the four air chambers, which make the berries float. Eating the fresh, tart fruit! Taste testing requires you to use all 5 senses. Smell the goodness! Two thumbs up from Jordan! Matthew gave it a thumbs up too! Maizie is taking her taste testing job very seriously! Many kids asked if they could have seconds. That's a good sign! The kids got recipes to take home too.
Jack is an amazing super hero- he is responsible, respectful, and safe. He read the class the book Ivan: The Remarkable True Story of the Shopping Mall Gorilla. It was such a good book, especially since I've read the book, The One and Only Ivan by the same author. This would be a great read aloud with your child, if you are looking for a book to read over break. Thanks for sharing that book with us and your wonderful poster, Jack!
Our hallway was looking a little sparse since the turkeys left us and went home. These reindeer turned out great. Students had to follow step-by-step directions to draw them.
Annie's cape billowed behind her as she walked the halls of RRO. She could be seen being repectful, responsible, and safe. Thanks, Annie for sharing a book with us, too!
Tia was our wonderful Super Hero last week. She wore her cape proudly and read a book to the class on Wednesday. Thank you Tia for always being a superhero!
We have worked so hard on our stories and now our rough drafts are finally done! Yesterday, students read through their rough draft and focused on having sentences of varying length so that their writing flowed well and didn't sound choppy or never ending. Today, students edited their stories with a partner. They focused on capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. Some students have pages and pages of writing! I am sure there are still mistakes, but it is so difficult for third graders to peer edit. We are starting the publishing process. I cannot wait to read these stories!
