The graduating class of 2017 walked through our halls today. The kids made sure to give high fives and cheer. Afterwards, I told the kids, with tears in my eyes, that that would be them in 9 years, walking proudly through the halls with their caps and gowns on.

In our study of adjectives, we started with the basics. What is an adjective? What can they do for our writing? We then made these little books to review adjectives and to learn about comparative and superlative adjectives. It was a perfect project to do after taking the M-Step this week.
Super Ava! Ava always has such s positive, hard working attitude. She is kind to everyone and always has a smile in her face. Thanks, Ava!
After students took the lengthy M-Step this week, we decided to create butterflies. I put up some pictures of butterflies and students drew, then went over the lines in black marker and then either painted them with watercolor or used chalk. I love how different they all turned out.
This week during our word study time, we are studying adjectives and how we need to use them in our writing to help our readers picture our setting, characters, and events in our stories that we write. I first read this description: This is Gertrude. She has a head, eyes, a nose, ears, a mouth, a neck, a belly with a bellybutton, arms and legs. Students drew this as I read it. Notice there are no adjectives, so everyone assumed it was a person. Students drew people that looked a lot like these ones. . . I then read them the exact same thing, but this time including adjectives. Here is what I read-
This is Gertrude. She has a fat, round head, three humongous blue eyes, a small pointy noise, long curly brown flowing hair, two large hairy ears, a huge smiling mouth, a long crooked neck, a round belly with three smelly bellybuttons, four short stubby arms, and one muscular leg. Wow! What a difference in the pictures, just by adding adjectives. Adjectives have power! |
