We then put our goals under the front flap or our superhero costume. Students had to decide on their super power and make the rest o their superhero. These will be hanging in the hallway for a bit before coming home.
On Friday, students made a goal for this year by completing the prompt "This year I hope to. . . " Students had such a variety of goals they made from reading more books to running faster miles in P.E. It is going to be a great year!

This week, we read the book, Have You Filled a Bucket Today?. We want to be a room filled with full buckets for each kid. Filling buckets is giving sincere compliments to people. We had a great discussion of ways we can fill each other's buckets and some examples of dipping into buckets and how that makes us feel. Students then wrote out examples of ways they can fill buckets in our classroom. Every Thursday we will be writing down some bucket filling for student and giving it to them. Whenever I read over all their bucket filling, it fills my bucket too! Your child is familiar with the terms "bucket filling" and "bucket dipping," so you can use those terms at home, too when they are filling and dipping buckets with you or with siblings. Sometimes, we need to just put a lid on our bucket too and not let things bother us. We need to protect our buckets from getting dipped into.
What a wonderful group of students! Students came into our classroom with smiles and some nervousness. They started by coloring a superhero mask. We had an assembly to review the school expectations. Then we talked about our third grade survival bag. To have a successful year we have to be flexible (rubber bracelets), laugh (laughy taffy), believe we are smart (smarties), make mistakes (eraser), stick together (stickers), play (play-doh), write (pencil), and read (bookmark). We had some time to play with our play-doh before going over some procedures and enjoying some superhero cupcakes. Yum! What a wonderful and smooth first day. Thank you so much for all the supplies you sent in. Our classroom is stocked for the year! To get to know one another better, students were broken into groups and sat around Venn Diagrams made with hula hoops. After I put a statement on the board, students sorted their names into the right hoop. For example, one statement was "I have brothers. I have sisters, or I have both brothers and sisters." I learned a lot about the students, too! Today we used the Chinese symbol for active listening to discuss all the components of active listening. We discussed what it looks like and sounds like. We then practiced active listening to our classmates as they shared their homework, which was to bring in two items that tell about themselves. The kids did a fantastic job of listening and asking questions to each other. It's going to be a great year! We hope to see you at the "Meet the Superintendent" community forum on Monday, September 14 at 6:30 p.m. in the MHS auditorium. This will be an opportunity to meet Superintendent Jeffrey Johnson and hear his vision for Montague Area Public Schools. |
