Gertrude has a head, a nose, a mouth, ears, hair, a belly, arms and legs.
Then I read the same description, but with adjectives.
Gertrude has a round, fat head, three humongous blue eyes, a small pointy nose, a gigantic smiley mouth, two huge hairy ears, long curly flowing brown hair, a round belly with two smelly bellybuttons, four short arms, and one muscular leg.
We discussed how as writers we need to use adjectives in our writing or the reader cannot paint a picture of our story or characters in their head. Without adjectives, students assumed Gertrude was a person, but with adjectives, she is an alien or a monster of some sort. Adjectives are important!
