Third graders need to know how to correctly use commas in addresses, in a series, and in dialogue with quotation marks. Recently, we have focused on commas in a series. We read a funny story called "When Comma Came to Town" to give the students a visual of why we even use commas. You will be seeing some papers coming home that your child did for practice. If the scores are not the greatest, have your child flip over the paper and give them some example sentences to write out with commas in the correct spots. For example, you can ask "What three toppings do you like on your pizza?" and your child would write something like, "On my pizza I like cheese, pepperoni, and ham." In third grade, students are taught to have a comma before the "and" in their lists.
This short week of not having spelling words gives us time in class to focus on some grammar and we will continue it into next week as well.

Hi Sheldin! We just read Johnny Comma, too. Do you remember that one where Johnny Comma acts like Johnny Appleseed and goes around putting commas around towns? They are good books. Hope you are having a great year
