We then talked about how you can kind of judge a book by its cover. I showed students the cover of the book Elmer and had them make a prediction of what they thought the author's purpose was just based on the book cover. Then, I showed the pictures in the book and students again predicted if the author wanted to persuade, inform, or entertain just by looking at the pictures. Then we read the book, and the students made a final choice and had to write why they felt that way. |
We have been talking about the three reasons why authors write books- to Persuade, to Inform, or to Entertain. After our discussion, students sorted book titles written on sticky notes into the correct column. We also talked about how as authors ourselves, we have to decide why we are writing a particular piece. When we wrote our realistic fiction stories, we were providing entertainment, where as our essays are trying to persuade. Students then went through a book order and searched for examples of books for each purpose and glued them down on a pie. They seem to have author's purpose! There are a few misconceptions that need clearing up. For example, students thought that if a story has a message or a lesson to learn, like to be yourself, then it was persuading them or informing them. Most books that entertain have a message or a lesson for us to learn as well.
