After our incredibly long opinion unit, I wanted the kids to practice doing shorter opinion pieces in a smaller amount of time. That way, they get used to stating their opinion and using reasons with parallel structure and mini stories to back up their claims. First, I am going to give the students an authentic audience by having them write an opinion letter to Mr. Henderson about a change they want to see made at the school. These changes can be serious (like having Spanish as a special) or not so serious (like having Mountain Dew coming out of the drinking fountains). Students were warned that they need reasons that support even their silly ideas and that may take some creativity on their parts. We started today by generating or making a list of all the changes we want. I loved hearing all the excited talk and ideas as the students jotted down their ideas. They are already hooked on this project!
