We began our nonfiction reading unit by reading the book Penguin Chick. Students learned tons of amazing penguin facts reading this book. During this unit our focus will be on finding the main idea of a given passage and identifying the details that support that main idea. Sometimes students will be practicing finding the main idea of an entire passage or book and sometimes just a paragraph. Sometimes the main idea will be a sentence they can just pluck from the paragraph and sometimes the main idea is unstated. If you get a chance, ask your child what the main idea of a text he/she is reading is and encourage your child to read some nonfiction. If you lack nonfiction books, they may always borrow from our classroom library or check some out from the library. We will be also studying nonfiction text features and how we can use those features to understand text more deeply. We watched a few short video clips on penguins so that students could see examples of some of our vocabulary words like huddle, shuffle, and down and so they could see the amazing transfer of the egg to the father and watch it hatch. Ask your child some of the things he/she found interesting in our study of penguins. And, on our half day last week, my class got to make some penguins by ripping paper. |
