Students also did a quick sorting of terms into one of two categories- nonfiction and fiction. We are going to have much discussion about some of the terms that were put into both. Lately, fiction and nonfiction is not as black and white as it used to be. Nonfiction is often written in a narrative way now and many fiction chapter books have pictures and captions. Things are a little more gray now, which provides great thought and discussion when doing a sort.

Using texts at the students' levels, students are going to work collaboratively and then on their own to find as many text features as they can. We are also working on finding the main idea and supporting details of an entire nonfiction text.
Soon, your child will be assigned homework to bring in an example of one of the above text features that they find at home. This could be from a newspaper, a magazine, a website., or any other nonfiction text. We will be making posters to hang in the room from all the examples students find. I cannot wait to see what your child finds!
