(minus two students who were sick)
What an amazing group of students! We had a wonderful first day back at school. We colored our super hero masks, attended an assembly to welcome back the students, went through our third grade survival bags, played with play-doh as we got to know the students we sit next to, ate cupcakes, read awesome books, played a team building game, and went over some of our procedures. Phew! The Super Heroes of room 409! (minus two students who were sick) For the team building activity, each group of three or four had to use a rubber band with four strings tied to it to make a solo cup pyramid. Students were not allowed to touch the cups with their hands. I loved watching the kids and listening to them encourage each other, give ideas, and shout a huge cheer when they proudly accomplished the task. We then had a discussion about how everyone needs to participate or it won't work- the rubber band won't fit over the cup if everyone doesn't give it a tug. We also talked about how every group needs a leader, but groups need followers too. We talked about how when something is just a little challenging, not too challenging where it is very frustrating, but just enough to be tricky, you have a bigger sense of accomplishment and pride when you do work hard and succeed. That was very evident of the cheering that took place once the pyramid was built for each group.
