There is something truly amazing about 26 students absolutely silent as they devour their books for book club. Today they met briefly to discuss the signposts that they have noticed in their books so far, and understandably, it was loud then. There was a steady rumble as everyone shared with their groups. Then, they decided as a group how much they were going to read today. They have been reading for 30 minutes. It is so silent you can hear a pin drop. The students are so into the books they picked. Every now and then, they take a short break to stick a sticky note in their books when they think they see a signpost, but other than that, they are nonstop reading- some laying on a pillow, some at a table, others sitting on the floor, or even standing. This is a wonderful sight and a wonderful sound- kids completely in to their books. No wandering. No getting up to get a drink or to sharpen their pencils, or wander around, or looking for books. Just reading. Tomorrow, they will meet as a group and talk about what they found and what they think about their books so far. Imagine, 26 students reading in silence.
